Getting Ready!

After spending the day in our new classroom, I am so excited for the school year to begin! Don't get me wrong, I love summer. However, there is something very exciting about a new school year (especially at a new school, with new students). I can't wait to meet everyone & get started on what I think will be an interesting school year.

Throughout the year, we will be using this site as a place to discuss our reading and writing. When you are searching the class library for your next great read, you may come to the blog to ask advise from other Tigers who may have read some of the books you are considering. Your book club may post your homework assignments right hear so that everyone can access them and share new thoughts. I may leave you comments on the reading strategies you are using. We may also use it for some writing activities. Overall, it will be a place that we can all share our learning experiences in a fun, different, and respectful way. Once we all decide on our "Blog Rules" I will post them so that we can all revisit them as the year goes on.

Anyway, the reason I am posting today is to give everyone a little information about me. I'd love for some of my new students to post back about what they did this summer or other interesting facts about themselves so we can get to know one another a bit more.

Some of my very favorite things in the whole, wide world are:
The New York Jets
my dog, Duke
traveling (you will hear a lot about this in my writing)
pizza & sushi
my family
visiting with friends
Harry Potter
listening to music
and curling up with a good book

To hone in on that last idea, I wanted to talk about some of the great things I have read this summer. I say things, rather than books, because I really enjoy reading articles from newspapers on my computer every morning. I have read some extraordinary ones this summer, some of which have already made it to room 105 so that I can share them with you! I have read quite the array of books since the end of last school year. Some were so funny that soda came out of my nose from laughing so hard while I was reading them. Others made me so sad that Duke curled up with me while I cried about them. Others weren't so great, but some were so great that they made up for the lackluster ones. The books that I would like to share with are the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. In a later post, I will use these books to model what blog reading reflections will look like in our class. But for now, I want to talk about how great these books are! I recommend them to any fans of Harry Potter books. Don't worry those of you who are anti-Potter, they are not about wizards. The books take place in America, but it looks nothing like the country we currently reside in. The government has set up districts, and the people in many of the districts are horribly poor, hungry, and depressed. The government has two young people from each district battle once a year for entertainment. That is all I will share for now, as I do not want to give too much away for anyone planning on reading these great books.

Time for me to get going now, but I will be posting more as we get closer to the start of school so that everyone has plenty of information in September.

Here is hoping everyone is having a safe & happy summer!
